What Is Agentic AI? The Smart, Goal-Driven, from the applications we use to the devices we use. But AI isn’t all the same. There are a variety of new types of AI, and one of the most exciting ones is called agentic AI. It’s changing how machines think and act. So, what is agentic AI? To put it simply, agentic AI is a type of AI that does not wait for instructions but takes charge. It identifies goals, takes action autonomously, and explores the best possible course of action, even when dealing with something it has never experienced before. Think of it like using a smart assistant that not only listens, but knows when to take command.

What Distinguishes Agentic AI?

What Is Agentic AI? The Smart, Goal-Driven, is more than following instructions to perform tasks. This type of AI seeks to accomplish a goal while breaking down a task and developing a list, and making plans to get there. There is a noticeable distinction between when goals come from a person and when the AI ascertains a goal rationally and moves to obtain the outcome regardless. The AI continues to adapt and achieve its goal. Think of it like this—your virtual assistant schedules meetings when asked, but it also tracks when you are busy and then, to maximize your free time, it can pivot your less important tasks to a later date; that is agentic AI in action.

It Works Independently

Agentic AI, as opposed to conventional AI, typically requires strict instructions and monitoring to accomplish tasks. Agentic AI does not need step-by-step instructions, does not need monitored direction, can learn what particular aspects of the world are operational, flexible in its functionalities to account for changes in objectives, and most importantly can always successfully move forward without the person in charge being present (i.e. does not need confirmation to achieve a goal).  Autonomous vehicles are a good analogy here; cars operate on streets (and in traffic) without human assistance because they actively evaluate the environment surrounding them (e.g., traffic, weather, obstacles) and make decisions based on that environment in real time. 

It Requires Initiative

It can start work without prompting, keep working when challenges arise, and change or adapt methods when something isn’t working; therefore, it can handle complex projects that need longitudinal attention. For example, in healthcare, agentic AI can track patient vitals and alert medical staff when it detects signals of a medical need, presumably saving lives before a crisis occurs.

It Learns and Adapts

Agentic AI is continuously absorbing information once again either from the world around it, or from the data it is processing. Most importantly, Agentic AI can utilize that knowledge for improving the way it processes decisions in the future. Its almost as if Agentic AI is a system that grows progressively smarter with each move it makes. For example, think of a personal fitness coach app. Each time you work out, the app will adjust how to design your workout based on how well or poorly you progressed. The app can adjust the intensity of the workout and/or the exercises involved to get you to your goals faster, and less riskier.

It’s being used to power virtual assistants that not only answer your questions but manage your day, autonomous vehicles that navigate city streets safely, and healthcare equipment that monitors patient health and alerts doctors when something doesn’t seem quite right. Because it can make its own smart decisions, agentic AI allows businesses to work faster and more intelligently, reduces mistakes, and can provide us with future opportunities we have yet to even think of.

With great power comes great responsibility. Because agentic AI can take action independently, it’s our job to make its actions consistent with ethical practice and human values.
